Islamabad September 20, 2017: Former President Asif Ali Zardari has said that promoting peace within Pakistan and the world over we need to build a narrative to counter the narrative of militants and extremists and also inculcate spirit of tolerance and plurality.
He said this on the eve of international day of peace being observed worldwide tomorrow Thursday.
“To fight militant mindset we need to build intellectual infrastructure that rests on the foundations of free inquiry and free debate not only in academic institutions but as a way of life”.
He said that it was unfortunate that militants were penetrating in academic institutions to indoctrinate young minds with their narrative but no effort was underway to counter it and develop an alternative narrative.
He said extremist mindset cannot be fought by military means alone. It can be fought by building an intellectual infrastructure based on respect for freedom of expression.
International Peace Day is an occasion to rededicate ourselves to the ideal of peace and harmony and also to take concrete steps to build a narrative that helped banish wars and promoted peaceful coexistence, he said.
It is also an occasion to increase awareness among people on issues of peace by holding discussions and seminars.
Achieving the ideals of peace is a collective responsibility of all–of individuals, of communities and of governments across the world and across all divides. Let us all seek to build genuine harmony and peace, he said
