Zardari warns Nawaz against ‘confronting institutions’

LAHORE: Former President of Pakistan and PPPP President Asif Ali Zardari has warned ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif against “confronting institutions”, saying it may have dire consequences.

“Nawaz Sharif is playing a dangerous game. He must know that the game of confrontation with institutions will have dangerous fallout,” he said while talking to the PPP ticket-holders for Punjab Assembly from Lahore in 2013 general elections here on Tuesday.

Mr Zardari, who is in the city since Friday to review the party’s Punjab chapter’s organisational matters and wooing back disgruntled leaders and workers, is set to visit ex-governor and PML-N’s dissident leader from Dera Ghazi Khan, Sardar Zulfikar Khosa, late on Tuesday evening.

According to sources, Mr Khosa is likely to join the PPP in a major breakthrough for the party in south Punjab politics.

Mr Zardari told the audience at the Bilawal House here that the PPP would outshine its rivals in the near future as Punjab, especially Lahore, was slipping out of the Sharifs’ hands.
Those who were in attendance included ex-prime minister Rajaz Pervaiz Ashraf, Chaudhry Manzoor, Aslam Gill, and Azizur Rehman Chan.

He said the PML-N government was undertaking development projects in the provincial metropolis to save its political interests.

He claimed that the PPP would perform better in Punjab, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in 2018 polls and exhorted the workers to begin preparing themselves for the electoral contest at the earliest.

He, however, said that major decisions would have to be taken pragmatically as the country was passing through the most difficult time of its history.

He said the situation of the national economy was at its worst and had declined further from where the PPP government had left in 2013.

The former ticket-holders suggested forming a committee to select the most suitable candidates for the next polls.

Mr Zardari said he was aware of the difficulties being faced by the party’s Lahore leadership and that he would devise a policy to resolve the same.

PPP to join FATA MNAs’ demo for merger into KP

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarians (PPPP) President Asif Ali Zardari has said that the his party will join the FATA members of the National Assembly (MNAs) in their demonstration on October 9 in Islamabad in support of their demand for merger of FATA into Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and other reforms to bring the tribal areas in the national mainstream.

Zardari assured this to FATA MNAs who called on him at Zardari House Islamabad on Tuesday evening.

The delegation, led by Shahjee Gul Afridi, included Haji Bismillah Khan, Nasir Khan and Bilal Rehman. Those on the PPP side who attended the meeting included MNA Ejaz Jakhrani, Senator Farhatullah Babar, Nayyer Hussain Bukhari, Sardar Ali Khan and Qayum Soomro.

Talking to the delegation, Zardari said that the PPP supported the demand for merger. Keeping in view the administrative, social, cultural, linguistic, political and geographical conditions, merger was the most logical and practical option, he said. “Opposing the merger defied logic,” he said.

Zardari also supported the demand that the jurisdiction of the Peshawar High Court (PHC) be extended to FATA. He said that the cabinet first decided to extend the jurisdiction of the Peshawar High Court to the tribal areas but all of a sudden it was reversed. “If FATA is to be eventually merged into KP, it is common sense that the jurisdiction of the PHC be extended.”

The former president said that when FATA was finally merged into KP, all the cases would then have to be transferred from the IHC to PHC and wondered if the implications had been thought over.

Zardari also called for changes to the present system that allowed political agents to arbitrarily levy cess, taxes and rahdari, and called for replacing it with budgetary allocations to political agents for meeting their administrative expenses subject to audit by the Auditor General of Pakistan.

The FATA MNAs thanked the former president for his support. Later, Zardari hosted a dinner in honour of the delegation.
