PPP Press conference in Islamabad

Islamabad, 2 May 2021: Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians Secretary General, Senator Farhatullah Babar and Pakistan Peoples Party Secretary General, Syed Nayyar Hussain Bukhari have said that the Election Commission has decided a recount in constituency NA-249 at the request of PML-N in the by-elections and while we welcome this decision, the manner in which such a situation was handled in the 2018 elections was very different. The PDM was made by the PPP and now we demand withdrawal of show cause notice and apology to us.

Farhatullah Babar said that we want to put forward some important points about the by-election of NA-249. The Election Commission has decided to recount at the request of PML-N. This is their right. We welcome it and want to see the Election Commission of Pakistan strong. Same was said in the 2018 elections that where the winning margin was less than 5%, it should have been recounted. The recount was to be held in 34 constituencies which were not conducted. Only the recount of two constituencies started and was stopped and never completed.

He said that this constituency NA-249 was not new to the PPP. The PPP candidate from this constituency had also won in the 1988 elections. The PPP does not have a large majority of votes in this constituency but we have considerable support for the PPP. The PPP has shown groundwork, activism and has now won.

He said that only the Election Commission could explain the reason for the delay in the counting process but there were 30 candidates and eight election observers who had to be given the Form 45 during Ramadan. For this exercise, the Election Commission has to fill 10-12 forms. Farhatullah Babar said that if we had lost this election, we would never have had raised this issue. We believe in election laws. He said that in the recount, the votes of PPP may increase. He said to the PML-N that you must go to the Election Commission but do not say that the PPP has come through the help of the establishment. Our movement is against Imran Khan and not the opposition.

Farhatullah Babar said that the internet is being tampered with in the name of security in Pakistan. Electronic voting will be more dangerous here. The countries that started it have also given up on using electronic voting machines. He said that this government is not serious about negotiating with the opposition. They are incompetent.

In response to a question, Farhatullah Babar said that the internet is being tampered with in the name of security every day in Pakistan. Many of the countries that started this experiment gave up and Imran Khan should know that there is a report by NADRA about EVM. He said that the PPP made the PDM, who are these people who are talking about us approaching them to rejoin the PDM, instead they should come to us, take back the show cause notice and apologize to us.

Syed Nayyar Hussain Bukhari said that the ground realities are very clear. PPP candidate has been present in this constituency. Qadir Mandokhel is a political activist. He has experimented with other political parties in the past like PML-N and PTI. PTI had introduced a technocrat Hafeez Sheikh who lost the Senate election. In NA-249 the PML-N introduced another technocrat, Miftah Ismail who also lost.

Before this, the role of the PTI candidate in this constituency was also in front of everyone who used to bring shoes and put them on the table and sometimes came with pistols. Nayyar Bukhari said that unemployment and lawlessness has increased in the country. We believe that the Election Commission will take decisions according to the law. Bukhari said that the PML-N harmed the PDM. The PPP was ready for a long march and no-confidence motion against the government.

Secretary General PPPP on EVM

Islamabad May 01, 2021: “The Electronic Voters’ Machine (EVM) in elections is a non starter in Pakistani context. Numerous studies carried out have shown that it is susceptible to manipulation and liable to be used for electoral fraud”

This has been stated by secretary general of Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians ex Senator Farhatullah Babar in a statement today.

He said that the computer based system of voting requires computer literacy that is also lacking in Pakistan. Even in some of those countries which initially adopted it in some constituencies have discontinued. In a country where state agencies switch on and off internet and social media platforms with impunity on the pretext of ‘national security’ it is not easy to trust EVMs. The fear of electoral manipulation will increase, not decrease, he said.

Farhatullah Babar said that when he was CEC late Fakhruddin G Ebrahim tinkered with the idea and even prepared to undertake a pilot project but had to back off when the security flaws inherent in the EVMs in our context convinced him that it was not workable. The slogan “We do not trust voting Computers” that reportedly was first adopted in the Netherlands in 2006 is likely to become a rallying point here also.

He said that Prime Minister Imran Khan is stuck in a dead end street and is making offers of talks to the opposition on non issues. History of the past over 30 months of his style of governance shows that talks and negotiations are alien to his temperament. The prime minister’s narcissism and self righteous approach has been the greatest stumbling block to negotiation and continues to be so.

Chairman PPP Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s message on May Day

ISLAMABAD/KARACHI, April 30: Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has said that the selected PTI government led by the puppet Prime Minister Imran Khan has turned out to be  absolutely devastating for the labour class in the country.

In his message on  World Labour Day being observed across the globe tomorrow, the PPP Chairman said that protection of rights of labourers is a cornerstone of the PPP’s ideology. The first-ever unanimously adopted Constitution by Prime Minister Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto enshrined a wide range of provisions to protect the rights of blue collar workers. Articles 11, 17, 18, 25 and 37(e) prohibit all forms of bonded labour, child labour, allow freedom of association, grant rights to unionise, provide citizens with the right to enter any lawful profession or trade without any discrimination, and secure humane and reasonable working conditions, he added.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari further pointed out that the first-ever comprehensive Labour Policy was also announced by Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in 1972 and with the subsequent legislation the scope of labour laws was enhanced and benefits like increased trade union rights, minimum wages, profit-sharing, statutory bonus, group insurance scheme, group incentive scheme, etc. were guaranteed. The Zia dictatorship reversed many of these progressive incentives and undid many of the gains Pakistan had made in securing labour rights, he added.

He said that Prime Minister Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto continued the PPP’s legacy by restoring labour rights and expanding benefit programs for the labour class. The PPP government led by President Asif Ali Zardari furthered this mission  by offering partnerships to labourers in the state companies under the  Benazir Employee Stock Option Scheme. Labour colonies with thousands of houses for laborers were also constructed, he added.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said that the selected government has only unleashed unemployment and poverty as millions have been turned jobless and pushed below the poverty line during last two and a half years.

The PPP Chairman pledged that his Party would continue to strive for the rights of the labour and working classes and it wouldn’t allow the selected regime to usurp their rights without facing strong resistance.

Former President Zardari’s May Day message

Islamabad/Karachi, 30 April 2021: Former President Asif Ali Zardari in his message on the May Day has said that Pakistan Peoples Party will continue to protect the rights of workers.

Asif Zardari said that today farmers are worried because they are not getting return for their crops and labor. He said that Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto always raised her voice in favor of the workers. Zardari said that Rs. 25 billion had been set aside for the welfare of the workers, working in government enterprises, which has been stolen by the present government. PPP ‘s government is synonymous with food security

Islamabad/Karachi, 28 April 2021: Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari slammed the federal government for raising the purchase price of wheat from Rs 1,400 to Rs 1,800 instead of Rs 2,000. In a statement issued from Media Cell Bilawal House, the Chairman PPP said that the federal government may keep a subsidy price of Rs 1,800 for wheat, but the PPP would not allow oppression of farmers in Sindh and the relief price will be Rs 2,000.

He said that the government should stop lying about declaring 28 per cent increase in the subsidy price of wheat from the old price of Rs 1,400 to 1800 as 400 per cent. Sindh has increased the purchase price to Rs. 2000 which is an increase of 42 per cent. He also said that today, for the first time in the history of the country, the support price of wheat is not the same in all the provinces. Imran Khan is responsible for this oppression on the farmers of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. The prices of everything from fertilizers, seeds and pesticides to agricultural machinery, electricity have gone up by 150 per cent and an increase in wheat subsidy of Rs 1,800 is an injustice to farmers. Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari also said that the federal government wanted the purchasing price of wheat to be Rs. 1600 but when the PPP fought for the farmers, the federal government increased the price a little. He reminded the people that the federal government created two wheat crises in three years.

Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari sharply criticized Imran Khan’s government and said that it is a result of the poor plan of the PTI government that today only two to two and a half weeks of wheat stock is left in the country. If the crisis is not dealt with, the country may once again face a shortage of flour, he said, adding that the wheat crop landed in Punjab in May last year and more than 10 million tonnes of wheat disappeared in July in Punjab. Imran Khan should ask his friends how the artificial crisis was created by smuggling wheat to Afghanistan. Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said that it is a shame that Pakistan, a wheat producing country, is importing wheat from abroad today.

Chairman PPP said that one of the reasons for the devastation of the economy is that the ruler of the agricultural country of Pakistan is unfortunately not even familiar with the alphabets of the word ‘agriculture’. Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari referring to the self-sufficiency of wheat in the PPP government (2008-13), said that the PPP federal government had made the country a wheat exporting country in just one year. The PPP government had increased relief price by 47% in the first year and 52% in the second year.

Is this the vision PTI government has for PIA?” questions Sherry Rehman

Islamabad, April 28, 2021: Addressing the government’s plan to split PIA into two firms, PPP Parliamentary Leader in the Senate, Senator Sherry Rehman said, “Tabahi Sarkar has literally crashed PIA by compromising several Pakistani pilots with clean licenses, got the airline grounded in EU capitals after “Licensegate”, sold PIA assets abroad via crony shell firms and are now cannibalising “old PIA” to create new business ventures. This is a new low”.

“About 2,000 PIA employees have been forced to take voluntary redundancy and now the plan is to lay off half of its 14,000 employees. Tabahi Sarkar is Awam dushman in unprecedented ways as all they do is sack people in covid times instead of creating jobs. If this is their revival plan for PIA then we shudder to think what they will be doing next,” she added.

Rehman questioned, “Why did the Government recently mislead the people by claiming PIA losses have been brought down? If this was the case then what losses are they talking about now. The carrier posted a net loss of 34.6 billion rupees ($226 million) for 2020, its loan has caused an overall loss of Rs460bn, the iconic Roosevelt Hotel in New York has been sold and our profitable International routes were parcelled to competitors. PIA is still reeling from Tabahi Sarkar’s blows, and now employees are being cited as the problem, when in fact it is the sheer incompetence of this government”.

“Everything can not be blamed on the pandemic. Even without the Covid restrictions, PIA was banned from Europe and the U.S. because of our Minister’s callous statement. Till date we have not seen him take responsibility for the loss that has occurred because of him. This government has single-handedly brought down PIA’s reputation and prestige. Our credibility is so damaged that there is no telling how long it will take to recover. Is this the vision PTI government has for PIA?” she questioned.

Rehman said, “The Parliament has not seen any business plan to reinvigorate PIA. After spending hours in standing committees to get to the bottom of safety issues and the crash, all we got were long public spats between CAA and Minister, who was never made accountable for huge reputational loss to PIA. In this Naya Pakistan, accountability is only reserved for the opposition as the ministers and cronies are above law”.

“We demand an inquiry into Licensegate and also want answers on what happened to the announced reduction in losses. What is the airline management’s game plan? Does it even have one? Because this so-called restructuring plan is anything but that,” concluded Vice President PPPP Senator Sherry Rehman,

Chairman PPP Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s statement on Justice Qazi Faez Isa

Islamabad/Karachi, 27 April, 2021: The recent judgement on Justice Qazi Faez Isa’s review petition is a welcome development. The PTI government’s attempt to blackmail, intimidate and harass an honorable judge of the Supreme Court has failed. It was an assault on the entire judiciary. There must be accountability for those in the PTI government who were part of this conspiracy. The accountability process must start from the Prime Minister who initiated this reference with malafide intent of attacking the Supreme Court and attempted to send a message of fear to every independent judge in the country. Attacks on judiciary are hallmarks of dictatorships. President Arif Alvi acted as the Prime Minister’s accomplice in this illegal, unconstitutional attack and as result lost any moral right to continue in office he and should resign immediately. It has also been established that Shahzad Akbar and Farogh Nasim acted maliciously and in bad faith to threaten the judiciary and they should be immediately removed from their positions and an independent inquiry initiated against them. The entire episode is a scathing indictment of this government, its bullying tactics, and its disregard for rule of law.

The PPP has always been an unwavering advocate of a strong, independent judiciary and even when historically PPP has been a victim of judicial murder and unfair treatment for three generations. PPP has always stood by constitutional supremacy and has never resorted to intrigues against or attack on the judiciary. Rule of law and not rule of men is the cardinal principle of democracy and the PPP will always be in the frontline to defend judicial independence, constitutional supremacy, and democracy. The PPP demands that this government respects democratic norms and end its campaign of victimization of judiciary, political opposition, media and all critical and dissenting voices.

PPP concerned over eviction notices to women employees from Fatima Jinnah Hostel

Islamabad April 27, 2021: Pakistan Peoples Party has expressed grave concern over the notices issued to women working in different departments to vacate Fatima Jinnah Hostel where they are living and demanded that the notices be immediately withdrawn.

The Ministry of Housing and Works has issued notices to the working women residing in the Hostel cancelling their allotments with directions to vacate rooms by this Friday April 30 without providing any alternate accommodation.

In a statement the secretary general of the Pakistan People’s Party parliamentarians former Senator Farhatullah Babar said that the eviction order in the month of Ramazan during pandemic was most insensitive, without precedence and in complete disregard of the vulnerabilities of working women.

The whimsical order is yet another manifestation of how insensitive the present government is to the issues of women.

Instead of providing working women more accommodation and a congenial atmosphere to work the government is throwing them out of the only accommodation available to them in the federal capital.

He asked the Housing Ministry to immediately withdraw the eviction notices adding “Pakistan People’s Party will also raise the issue in the parliament and at all available forums”

The hostel for working women is named after the sister of Quaid e Azam, he said and “throwing out women from it is a great disservice to the memory of Fatima Jinnah”.

He said that the PPP had built Nusrat Bhutto Hostel for working women in the federal capital which was gradually put out of use due to animosity with the Bhutto name just like the name of Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) is changed to Ihsas program. Bhuttos reside in the hearts and minds of people and their memory cannot be erased by such expressions of animosity.

If the government cannot improve their lot it should at least not take away from the women whatever little they may have, he said.
