President Asif Ali Zardari has extended felicitations to the President of South Africa, Mr Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa and the people of South Africa on the occasion of their National Day.

In a message on behalf of the Government and the people of Pakistan, the President said that Pakistan attaches great importance to its cordial relations with South Africa which are rooted in shared values, mutual trust and a common commitment to peace, development and multilateral cooperation.

Message from the President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan on United Nations Chinese Language Day (20 April 2026)

Chinese Language Day highlights the global importance of linguistic understanding in an increasingly connected world.

In Pakistan, interest in the Chinese language has grown steadily, particularly in universities where structured teaching programmes are now well established. At institutions such as the University of Karachi and the University of the Punjab, along with programmes at the National University of Modern Languages, students are offered graded instruction, certification courses and cultural learning opportunities.

In Sindh, the Confucius Institute at the University of Karachi serves as a major centre for Chinese language education, offering systematic courses and training with both local and native instructors. Similar initiatives in other parts of the country have expanded access for students and professionals seeking practical language skills.

This growth also extends to specialised training for personnel working in public service roles involving coordination with Chinese nationals. Such instruction supports clearer communication and more effective working arrangements on the ground.

For many young people, learning Chinese is increasingly linked to opportunities in education, trade and technical cooperation. It provides a practical skill that can support engagement with Chinese companies, scholarship programmes and joint projects across different sectors.

As this work progresses, the focus should remain on accessible and structured language education that responds to real needs and strengthens practical cooperation between the two countries

First Lady Bibi Aseefa Bhutto Zardari urges public cooperation as nationwide polio campaign begins 13 April

Bibi Aseefa Bhutto Zardari has called on families and communities across Pakistan to fully cooperate with the upcoming nationwide polio vaccination campaign, set to begin on 13 April, and ensure that every child is protected from the disease.

The campaign aims to vaccinate over 45 million children under the age of five across all provinces and regions as part of the ongoing national effort to eradicate polio.

Pakistan, she noted, stands at a critical juncture in its fight against the virus. Years of sustained effort have brought the country closer to eradication, with the coming phase representing the final stretch where reaching every child is essential.

From 13 to 19 April, frontline health workers will conduct door-to-door visits, covering urban centres as well as remote communities. In addition to administering polio drops, children will also receive Vitamin A supplementation to support immunity and healthy growth.

The First Lady highlighted measurable progress. In 2025, 31 cases of polio were reported nationwide, while in 2026 only one case has been recorded so far. She cautioned, however, that the threat persists. As long as the virus exists anywhere, it remains a risk everywhere. She stressed the need for consistency, urging parents and caregivers to ensure their children receive vaccination in every campaign, alongside routine immunisation.

The campaign will be conducted in coordination with Afghanistan, reflecting a shared commitment to interrupt cross-border transmission and close remaining gaps.

Bibi Aseefa Bhutto Zardari also acknowledged the contribution of frontline workers, whose continued efforts remain central to reaching every household.

She called for collective resolve, emphasising that ending polio is now within reach and depends on the participation of parents, families, communities and institutions alike. No child, she underscored, can be left behind.

Pakistan is proud to have led with wisdom, resolve, and a steadfast commitment to peace

Pakistan is proud to have led with wisdom, resolve, and a steadfast commitment to peace, and remains deeply appreciative of the leadership of Iran and the United States for stepping back from the brink and choosing dialogue over devastation. I commend the tireless efforts of the leadership in Tehran, Washington, and Islamabad in creating the space for de-escalation and diplomacy to prevail.

This ceasefire offers a critical opening for the region to breathe, recover, and turn away from the shadow of a wider war. May this not remain merely a pause in conflict, but become the beginning of a durable peace, one that unlocks stability, promotes cooperation, and advances shared prosperity for our region and the world.
