President Asif Ali Zardari addressing a meeting of Pakistan Peoples Party local and provincial leadership at Bilawal House.
President Zardari urges political dialogue, rejects confrontation
President Asif Ali Zardari expressed his deep conviction that democracy remains the strongest instrument for justice, unity, and national progress.
Reflecting on the historic moment when Benazir Bhutto took oath as Prime Minister, he recalled her words: “I have avenged my father, for democracy is the best revenge.” President Zardari emphasized that this guiding principle continues to shape the vision of the Pakistan Peoples Party, and that he, along with Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, remains committed to pursuing the same path of political engagement and dialogue.
He said this while addressing a public gathering at the residence of President Pakistan People’s Party South Punjab, Makhdoom Ahmed Mahmood, during his visit to South Punjab.
Highlighting the importance of lawful politics, the President warned against the use of arms or incitement against state institutions. Referring to unrest in certain regions, he stressed that those who attempt to provoke the public against the military serve the interests of Pakistan’s enemies. “I have always advised people that taking up weapons only harms your own community,” adding that Pakistan’s security forces were stationed to maintain peace and protect citizens.
President Zardari also noted the transformative impact of the information revolution, saying that today, facts can be verified quickly and misinformation cannot survive. He recalled the vision of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, stating that the creation of Pakistan ensured the protection of rights and freedoms, particularly for minorities. He contrasted this with the situation in neighboring India, where he said religious divisions were exploited, preventing the country from advancing as a truly secular nation.
Reflecting on leadership, President Zardari stated, “A true leader fights courageously, even if it means going to jail, but always protects their people and party. Mere loud rhetoric does not equate to sacrifice.”
He emphasized that while some politicians may claim to be bold, their inability to endure hardships exposes their limitations.
Speaking on the role of Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, President Zardari praised his diplomatic achievements as Foreign Minister, noting that even foreign officials admired his capabilities. “We were offered to manage foreign affairs, but we gave the opportunity to the government.” He said that they had promised to support the government and would stand committed to that promise.
Expressing confidence in the Pakistan Peoples Party’s future, he predicted that one day the party would achieve a two-thirds majority and take governance to the next level.
President Zardari reaffirmed the party’s commitment to democratic consultation, recalling the legacy of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto, who always sought public opinion before making key decisions. He said that Bilawal Bhutto Zardari was being trained in the same approach of people-centric leadership.
Addressing regional concerns, the President acknowledged the longstanding demand for a Saraiki province, explaining that it stems from the historical deprivation of South Punjab. He said that, keeping in view the sense of deprivation in this area, the Pakistan Peoples Party gave the prime ministership and governorship to South Punjab.
He stressed that, as the President of the federation, he represents all provinces equally.
Highlighting Pakistan’s strategic potential, President Zardari said the country was situated in an ideal location, with a 1,100-mile coastline, offering significant opportunities for trade and development. He expressed confidence in Pakistan’s bright future, emphasizing that the nation’s progress depends on democracy, equitable governance, and public engagement.
The President reaffirmed his commitment to work for the prosperity of all citizens and the next generation.
He stated that in the next elections, the government would focus on addressing the people’s demands and ensuring that the Pakistan Peoples Party continues to strengthen democracy, safeguard public welfare, and lead the nation toward progress.
Governor Punjab Sardar Saleem Haider expressed his gratitude to President Asif Ali Zardari for taking time out of his busy schedule to visit South Punjab, describing the visit as a significant morale booster for Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) workers. He said the enthusiasm of party workers is proof that the future belongs to the PPP.
Governor Haider praised President Zardari’s leadership following the tragic assassination of Benazir Bhutto, saying that he not only stabilized the party but also played a crucial role in maintaining national stability at a time when public anger threatened to disrupt the country. “The slogan ‘Pakistan Khappay’ raised by Zardari during that period will be written in golden letters in history,” he added.
Highlighting the contributions of key party figures, the Governor said, “Makhdoom Ahmed Mahmood was a source of pride for both the PPP and South Punjab.” He noted that the PPP’s leadership has historically made great sacrifices, citing Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who faced numerous allegations during his lifetime but is now recognized as one of the country’s greatest leaders. He also paid tribute to Benazir Bhutto, emphasizing that she gave her life for the country.
Governor Haider further stated that no other leaders in the country match the level of vision and commitment demonstrated by Asif Ali Zardari and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. Recalling Pakistan’s successes in international relations and defense, he credited Zardari’s strategic vision for strengthening Pakistan’s ties with China during his 14 visits between 2008 and 2013, as well as for successfully countering India through advanced technology collaborations.
He added that the strong Pakistan–China friendship is a direct result of President Zardari’s foresight and that, unlike India, which often misleads the international community, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has presented Pakistan’s case effectively on the global stage.
Governor Haider concluded by emphasizing the necessity of PPP governance for the country’s progress, expressing confidence that President Zardari and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari will continue to lead the nation forward. He also noted that Zardari’s recent 12-day stay in Lahore had invigorated party workers there, and similarly, his visit to South Punjab has greatly motivated the PPP’s grassroots supporters.
Makhdoom Ahmed Mahmood lauded the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) workers for their dedication and experience, calling them the driving force behind the party’s success in the 2014 local government elections. “It is because of these committed workers that we are on this stage today. They are our pride, and they have ensured that three out of six seats in Rahim Yar Khan district belong to the PPP,” he said.
He highlighted the historical role of the PPP in advancing regional autonomy, recalling that the 2008 provincial assembly unanimously passed resolutions for the creation of South Punjab and Bahawalpur provinces. These resolutions were later approved by the National Assembly and legislated in the Senate. He said, “The creation of South Punjab province is the voice of the people’s heart and will open new avenues for development in the region.”
Makhdoom Ahmed Mahmood also thanked the Sindh government for initiating projects such as the SIUT facility, which has benefited thousands of people. He announced plans to establish an IT institute in Rahim Yar Khan to provide local youth with access to high-quality education and skills training.
Addressing security challenges in the district, he noted that Rahim Yar Khan previously faced significant criminal activity, often testing the capabilities of security forces. He commended Police Officer Imran Samoo for effectively resolving these issues with professionalism and dedication. Makhdoom Ahmed Mahmood requested President Asif Ali Zardari to nominate Officer Imran Samoo for a high-level award in recognition of his outstanding service.

The meeting was chaired by Dr Asim Hussain, Personal Physician to the President.
The Uzbek side, joining virtually, was represented by Mr Babayev Alisher, First Deputy Minister of Health; Mr Alizhanov Abror; Prof Yusupalieva Gulnora; and Prof Gulyamov Surat.
The meeting was informed that during the recent state visit to Pakistan by the President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, a broad set of 28 memoranda of understanding and cooperation agreements were exchanged between Pakistan and Uzbekistan across diverse sectors including health, education and pharmaceuticals, reaffirming both countries’ intent to strengthen bilateral collaboration.

The meeting noted that more than 1,200 Pakistani students are currently studying in Uzbekistan in various disciplines, and that Uzbekistan has registered over 180 types of Pakistani pharmaceutical products, reflecting expanding people-to-people and commercial links.
Dr Asim Hussain emphasised the potential to further expand cooperation in medical education, scientific research and the practical training of doctors.
Uzbekistan officials provided an overview of their healthcare sector, noting the presence of approximately 9,000 private clinics, with half of surgical procedures conducted in private facilities, and expressed interest in providing job opportunities to Pakistani doctors and allied professionals.
The meeting concluded with an understanding to continue consultations and to examine modalities for moving forward in line with the President’s direction. It was agreed that a delegation of Pakistani health professionals would soon visit Uzbekistan to follow up on the discussions and decisions made today.
PPP Rejects Nepra Formula, Demands Relief for People
The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has strongly rejected the Nepra formula, terming it a decision that would burden the masses with additional hardships instead of providing relief.
In a statement released from Islamabad, PPPP Secretary General, Syed Nayyer Hussain Bukhari, urged the Prime Minister to reject the Nepra formula in the interest of the people.
Bukhari criticized the government for announcing the decision without discussing it in the relevant parliamentary committees, stating that no institution is above parliament. He demanded that the matter be thoroughly discussed in parliament, and the opinions of members be taken into consideration.
The PPP leader described the Nepra formula as akin to enmity with the consumers, saying that buying electricity at one rate and selling it at a much higher rate of Rs. 30 per unit is nothing but exploitation.
He further stated that placing an additional burden on those who have installed solar panels is unjust. The people are already reeling under the pressure of inflation, and the PPP will raise its voice on every forum to address their issues.
President Zardari Welcomes Uzbek President’s Invitation, Emphasises Strengthening Ties

First Lady of Pakistan, Bibi Aseefa Bhutto Zardari participates in the 2026 Zayed Award for Human Fraternity Majlis in Abu Dhabi
First Lady of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Bibi Aseefa Bhutto Zardari, MNA, participated in the 2026 Zayed Award for Human Fraternity Majlis in Abu Dhabi, on the invitation of the Government of the United Arab Emirates. The Majlis is a cornerstone convening within the annual calendar of the Zayed Award for Human Fraternity, reflecting the UAE’s enduring commitment to coexistence, compassion, dialogue, and human unity.
This year’s Majlis carried particular significance as it was held under the theme of the “Year of the Family,” echoing the vision of Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan that the family remains the foundation of national strength, prosperity, and continuity. Rooted in the Emirati majlis tradition, defined by humility, wisdom, and hospitality, the gathering brought together global leaders, thinkers, and changemakers to engage in open and reflective dialogue aimed at translating shared human values into practical and inclusive outcomes.
The First Lady participated in a high-level panel titled “Female Leadership at the Heart of Human Fraternity,” a distinguished dialogue bringing together influential women leaders whose work has strengthened the social fabric of their nations. The session was moderated by Mina Al-Oraibi, Editor-in-Chief of The National (UAE). The discussion highlighted leadership models grounded in empathy, moral courage, and inclusive governance, underscoring how resilient families often form the starting point for cohesive communities and enduring social harmony.
During her remarks, the First Lady reflected on the legacy of her mother, Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, Pakistan’s first female Prime Minister and the first woman to lead a Muslim-majority country. She emphasised that trust in public institutions cannot be built through instructions alone, but through listening, continuity, and genuine engagement at the community level. Drawing on Pakistan’s experience, she highlighted the globally recognised Lady Health Workers Programme as a powerful example of two-way communication between the state and households, bringing healthcare, vaccination awareness, and dignity directly to families’ doorsteps.
She noted that the programme’s success lies in its community-embedded approach, where thousands of women health workers speak the same language, understand local social and cultural contexts, and serve as trusted and familiar faces. Citing recent vaccination campaigns, including HPV outreach and Pakistan’s first nationwide polio eradication drive, the First Lady underscored how trust, empathy, and dialogue at the household level significantly improve public health outcomes. She described community health workers as the vital link between national health systems and families, particularly in reaching mothers and children.
The First Lady further stressed the importance of aligning education, family, and leadership in shaping values among future generations. She observed that children learn best when values are practiced daily rather than conveyed through occasional instruction. Reflecting on her own schooling experience in the UAE during her family’s exile, she recalled how initiatives such as cultural weeks and environmental awareness programmes fostered habits of respect, responsibility, and civic engagement. She noted that when schools view parents as partners and parents see schools as character-building communities, the impact on a child’s development is profound.
In this context, the First Lady praised the UAE leadership for consistently emphasising tradition, cultural respect, and service to society, describing the designation of 2026 as the Year of the Family as a powerful and timely message. She noted that when leadership, educators, and families act in harmony, they shape citizens who are grounded, compassionate, and committed to the collective good.
The First Lady attended the Majlis where she was received by Judge Mohamed Abdelsalam, Secretary General of the Zayed Award for Human Fraternity.
Prior to the panel discussion, the First Lady also interacted with a number of distinguished participants, including H.E. Nehmat Aoun, First Lady of Lebanon; H.E. Megawati Sukarnoputri, Former President of the Republic of Indonesia and Member of the 2024 Zayed Award Judging Committee; H.E. Verónica Alcocer García, First Lady of Colombia; H.E. Leyla Aliyeva, Vice-President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation; and H.E. Saida Mirziyoyeva, Head of the Administration of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan and Member of the 2026 Zayed Award Judging Committee.
The First Lady’s participation reflected Pakistan’s continued commitment to the promotion of human fraternity, inclusive leadership, and the strengthening of family and community values at the national and global levels.
